...remained healthy - retail sales grew 19% in the fourth quarter - economists don't think the average Chinese has a big enough wallet to make up for weak demand overseas. "The reliance on the U.S. consumer as the buyer of last resort is going to have to change," says Michael Buchanan, chief Asia economist at Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong. He says "China has a long way to go in adjusting" to this fundamental change in the world economy...
...Buchanan's forecast for China's GDP growth in 2009 is among the most bearish: 6%. If he's right, that would be the lowest rate since 1990. But the data released Thursday did show some unexpected signs of life. Industrial production revived slightly in December, and loan growth surged. Merrill Lynch said in a report that the fourth quarter of 2008 and this current quarter could be "the trough of this growth cycle," as government stimulus and loose monetary policy begin to boost domestic demand. The data gave enough hope to Credit Suisse's Tao to convince...
...James Buchanan basically started this trend, with 1866's instantly forgettable Mr. Buchanan's Administration on the Eve of the Rebellion, a partial attempt to shift blame for the causes of the Civil War away from his administration. Later the 18th president, penniless and deathly ill in his final years, negotiated a deal with publisher Mark Twain to write the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. In an unscientific survey of 109 historians, 61 percent of them ranked Bush the worst president in history—a number that undoubtedly would be higher if James Buchanan had mastered that whole leave-the-country-in-one-piece-when-you-exit-office thing. Furthermore, the populace outside the Ivory Tower seems to agree. Last December, a USA-Today Gallup poll indicated that 67 percent of Americans disapprove of Bush’s job as President, and a NBC-Wall Street Journal...
...Buchanan says he plans to test the hearing of the world's top golf professionals at the British Open in 2009, "which should give us a better idea of the dangers of frequent use." Until further study is completed, he recommends that golfers who use modern titanium drivers wear earplugs as a precaution - advice that may not be as onerous as it sounds. After all, earplugs can protect golfers not just from the crack of the club but also the more harrowing sound that often follows: a splash...
