...boys from Bucharest did the customary tourist scene-a bateau mouche ride down the Seine, a grand tour of Versailles, a quick tramp through the Louvre, a weekend in the Loire Valley chateau country-but at the same time took plenty of opportunity to flirt with the French government. Charles de Gaulle is convinced that the Soviet bloc is crumbling under the pressure of traditional nationalisms, thus opening opportunities for the spread of French influence. De Gaulle himself granted Maurer an hour-long audience in which he turned on that rarely seen Gaullist charm. As Maurer emerged, newsmen asked...

Reportedly the Hungarians and Bulgarians put out similar feelers. In Geneva, two Rumanian envoys made contact with Common Market bureaucrats, but dropped a scheduled "working lunch" when word leaked out prematurely...

While Bucharest is changing Russian street names, dropping the Russian language as a compulsory subject in schools and closing the city's Russian bookstores, Rumanians and Soviet ideologues exchange insults. When Radio Moscow called Rumania "intentionally perverse" in its new economic relations with non-Communist countries, Radio Bucharest replied acidly: "Is it necessary for a country to stop developing its own resources in order to get a certificate of good behavior in the socialist camp...
