...AGENCY IN LONDON LAST WEEK was filming a TV commercial for Greenpeace. Directed by Hollywood horrormeister Roger Corman (A Bucket of Blood, Swamp Women), it opens with a mother beckoning to her children. At first they surround her lovingly, lavishing hugs and kisses on her. Then they turn savage, scratching and dragging her to the ground, where she is left battered and bleeding. The heavy-handed metaphor is meant to represent Mother Earth's treatment by humans, but it might just as well serve as a caution for Greenpeace itself...
...grand prizewinner will snag $10 million--but today's is surely the most picturesque: a bright red Jaguar convertible. The Prize Patrol suspects that Hall will be the kind of small-town elderly woman who will look good on tape as she weeps for joy in a snazzy bucket seat (she will, of course, have the option of choosing a $65,000 check instead). Says Crouch: "My singers and I gathered around him and prayed that everything would settle and all the sparks would stop." The hype surrounding HIStory is more like a four-alarm fire, a marketing campaign that will blaze through Christmas 1996. Crouch should...
...thousands of NRA members who have joined paramilitary organizations, all with a deep-seated fear of the federal government, demonstrate a rejection of and withdrawal from society. A fundraising letter from a top NRA lobbyist calling federal law enforcers "jack-booted government thugs [wearing] Nazi bucket helmets and black storm-trooper uniforms" attests further to this alienation...
