Just for a bucket...
...several days, the best minds of Ihlamour bent to the task of extracting Yusuf's duck. Scheme A was to lower a large shallow bucket down the well in the hope that the duck would swim into it. Several times the duck did so, but always flopped out before the bucket could be hauled to the surface. Scheme B was to tie fish lines to hard indigestible crusts of bread in the hope that Yusuf's duck would swallow line and crust, allow himself to be hauled to the surface. Yusuf's duck did not. Neither Mr. Powys nor his "Fables" are for the poor mortal who likes a good story, but who can not abide "literature." Like a medium, this clever writer makes such homely objects as a bucket and a rope scamper and talk worldly wisdom in a naive accent. And if you would find the love affairs of "The Seaweed and the Cuckoo-Clock" amusing and enlightening you will proclaim "Fables" an important piece of workmanship. There is no doubt that this little book is very much the thing for the right people...
Less pleasant than Sing Sing are New York's Auburn and Dannemora, with their ancient cell blocks, cramped, fetid cells, loathsome bucket system of sewage disposal, where last summer's riotings began.
