...Budapest, a conference of national Communist parties, convening behind closed doors, did little to cement the cracks of disunity. Only 52 of the 88 invited parties bothered to come to the session, which was sponsored by the Russians. At week's end, those who did come were reported close to an agreement on an agenda and a date for a Communist summit conference in Moscow that the Kremlin has been promoting for years. The leaders had trouble, however, disguising the fact that most of the bloc will welcome such an event with a lack of enthusiasm bordering on dismay...
...Sneers. From Budapest to Peking, Communists greeted the gold stampede with outright gloating-showing at least that Lenin's followers still heed his counsel: "The way to defeat the capitalist system is to debauch its currency." Also, as the. only Communist there on friendly terms with West Germany and Israel, Ceausescu gave notice that he would not join in the usual attacks...
...Light Around the Body, harked back not to Byron or Donne but to celebrated atrocities of the past. "I am uneasy at a ceremony emphasizing our current high state of culture," said Bly. "It turns out that we can put down a revolution as well as the Russians in Budapest, we can destroy a town as well as the Germans did at Lidice, all with our famous unconcern." For his hyperbole-the kind of thing that Vladimir Nabokov calls poshlost-Bly drew some expected cheers, and a resounding volley of jeers...
