According to Esquire magazine, Courtney Love has been crisscrossing the country seeking a resting place for husband Kurt Cobain's ashes. This summer she left two handfuls at a Buddhist monastery in Ithaca, New York, where monks performed consecration rituals on them. However, she seems to have forgotten to pick them up. The monks have delivered them to an undisclosed location. Says a monastery official: "We're not a cemetery. We're no Graceland." Well, actually, neither is Graceland. ...WEAK LIGHT OF DAWN ONE morning last week, hundreds of Buddhist monks gathered at the Jokhang temple in Lhasa to select a new Panchen Lama, the second highest religious leader in Tibet. Traditional yak-butter lamps glowed as three ivory markers were placed inside a golden urn. Each marker was inscribed with the name of a Tibetan boy identified, during a six-year search, as a possible incarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama, who died in 1989. The urn was turned several times, and then a senior monk withdrew a marker bearing the name of Gyaincain Norbu...

...more than happy about the release of Burma's chief dissident, Aung San Suu Kyi, after six years of house arrest [BURMA, July 24]. She is the only person who can bring peace to Burma. With her humanitarianism, intellect and Buddhist gentleness, she brings a hitherto unseen sophistication to the politics of her country. The people of Burma deserve a better future.
