...White House horrors. In a new, eight-hour Watergate series, Blind Ambition, CBS has tried to profit from ABC's dilemma. A docu-drama adapted from John Dean's memoir (among other sources), Blind Ambition recites enough facts to satisfy the most literal and obsessive Watergate buff. Yet scrupulous accuracy does not necessarily make for good drama or even good history. For all its intricate detail, CBS'S show is a less incisive account of the Nixon scandals than its pulpy predecessor. ABC took the audience into the heart of the forest of Watergate; CBS shows...

...divorce, scored a demi-triumph as a lobbyist for low-income housing before the same Senate subcommittee on which he once sat. Now Brooke is taking a second wife: Anne Fleming, 30, of Saint Martin in the West Indies. Fleming speaks four languages, is a gourmet cook and opera buff. But her husband is obviously as impressed by her political credentials: her great-grandfather, grandfather, father and uncle have all been mayors of French Saint Martin...

...changes to the car are essentially straightforward. Moody, an engineer, and Shetley, a car buff, made some aerodynamic changes in the body of a standard Capri, stripped the drive train, rear axle and motor and added a Pinto transmission, a Mustang rear end and a Perkins diesel engine. The key change was putting on a turbocharger. This reroutes hot exhaust gases (which would normally escape from the tail pipe) to a paddle-wheel turbine that compresses the engine's air-fuel mixture and gives the motor a sudden burst of power...

...because his talent as an interviewer and reporter gushes from every page like Old Faithful. From interviews with The Washington Post's Kay Graham, among others, Halberstam has drawn an engrossing and remarkably full account of her husband Philip's manic-depression and tragic suicide in 1963. From Dorothy "Buff" Chandler, he elicited the real reason her husband Norman dropped Robert Taft in 1952 to go for Ike--Buff simply refused to sleep with Norman until he came around. From friends and colleagues of Ed Murrow, Halberstam relates the details of CBS chairman Bill Paley's horning...

...materials are certainly saccharine. The lovers not only are adolescents but possess near genius IQs. Daniel (Thelonious Bernard), the son of a Parisian cab driver, is a movie buff with the auteurist sensibility of a Sorbonne professor and the computer know-how of an M.I.T. grad. Lauren (Diane Lane), the stepdaughter of an overseas American corporate executive, reads Heidegger for kicks. These two meet, go steady, then flee their meddling parents by traveling by train with Olivier from Paris to Venice. Hokey as it seems, this film's Romeo and Juliet want to pledge their eternal love by kissing...
