These days, as critics rightly point out, the space shuttles exist principally to build and service the station, and the station exists merely to give the shuttles a place to go. The shuttles, meantime, which have already claimed the lives of 14 astronauts, continue to accumulate wear as they limp toward the 2010 deadline when the station is set to be completed and they'll be allowed to retire. In the next several days, Atlantis astronauts will undertake a risky spacewalk to repair a thermal blanket that pulled up from a small section of one of the shuttle's engines...
...unease is in the air. Sitt has also included a 40-story residential building in his plans. He says amusements aren't profitable on their own, but locals fear that housing in the amusement district would water down Coney Island's noisy eccentricity. The Cyclone and Wonder Wheel are national landmarks, but Sitt's company now plays landlord to most of the rest of Coney Island's rides. The locals are particularly concerned, since some of Sitt's actions-- he demolished go-karts and batting cages this winter, long before he could start building anything to replace them--evoke...
...Sitt, who lived within walking distance of Coney Island as a child, insists he'll make the place vibrant again and is even considering ways to build his complex without housing. "This is one of the most important pieces of American history," he says. And his critics seem willing to drop their opposition if he drops housing. "Joe Sitt can still be a hero," says local historian Charles Denson. "He could go down in history as someone who saved Coney Island." But at this point, that's conjecture. The only certain thing is that if you love the old Coney...
...made a star of Steve Carell, who was then signed to be the lead in Evan Almighty. It's a sequel to the Jim Carrey hit Bruce Almighty, in which an ordinary guy is given supernatural powers by God himself. This time, Congress-man Evan (Carell) is told to build an ark in preparation for a coming flood. A premise for surefire laughs, unless you happen to live in New Orleans. But God didn't foot the bill for the movie's cost overruns; Universal did. The final price tag was something like $175 million, the highest ever...
...either cut way down on movie work or found other employment. And few youngsters have risen to take their place. Instead of tapping the icons, producers of action epics often recruit dramatic actors (Johnny Depp for Pirates, Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man, Matt Damon for the Bourne franchise) and build the big stunt scenes around them...
