...Hallelujah Trail is bigger but not better than any of the recent comedies that are supposed to milk laughs from the sacred cows of the Hollywood western. The sheer bulk of the opus is one clue to its failure. Given a plot with several droll twists, Director John Sturges (The Great Escape, Bad Day at Black Rock) lets his camera roam freely over the Cinerama landscape, too often striving for epic effects when antic effects are needed...
Mexico is itself a living museum. From 5,000 years ago until the Spanish conquest, its civilizations recognized their gods in the volcanoes and valleys that made their world a temple. To bring the gods closer, the Aztecs carved idols such as the rain god Tlaloc, whose 168-ton bulk now looms outside Mexico City's new National Museum of Anthropology (see color pages). The building itself reflects the autochthonous architecture of Mexico's landscape; it, too, is a living temple...
Liberties. The U.S. hold-down on dollar loans abroad has not badly hurt the U.S. branches because most of them have built up substantial pools of foreign capital, in many countries now make the bulk of their transactions in local currencies. Dealing in foreign money can, of course, be risky: First National City reported last week that it recently lost $8,000,000 through currency dealings in an unnamed country-probably owing to devaluation or runaway inflation. Helping to compensate for such hazards is the fact that commercial banks can do something abroad that they are forbidden...
Savings from Size. One of the biggest reasons for the rush to the beach is the recent development of gargantuan bulk-carrier ships (up to 60,000 tons) that can haul coal and ore cheaply over vast distances. Another is the efficiency of the U.S. coal industry, whose mechanized output now undersells that of German and British mines in Europe, despite much higher U.S. wage rates, and is easily transported to seaports. Then, too, huge new deposits of high-grade ore that could be transported cheaply have been discovered in under developed countries. Result: waterside plants that are free...
...being held hostage by the Germans. The G.I.s who liberate them include wry-smiling Sergeant Cliff Robertson and the inevitable New York Jewish joker (Red Buttons) assigned to all units for comedy relief. Since the village is under siege, Cliff is ordered to evacuate his charges, and the bulk of the action consists of dreary trudging to and from the beach, battling military red tape, ducking strafer planes, and getting acquainted...
