...above the northern wilds of the Democratic Republic of Congo when he saw a dark shape racing between two patches of tropical forest. "It was huge," says Pontier, a missionary pilot. "It was black. The skin was kind of bouncing up and down on it." From its bulk and color, Pontier thought it was a buffalo until he circled down for another look. "I saw it again just before it went into the forest," he says. "It was an ape--and a big one." Not buffalo size...

...scope of last week’s tsunami. Scientists are in almost complete agreement about these ramifications, although they may disagree about its causes. Fortunately, global warming, like hunger and poverty, is a crisis that we can help to avert. The United States and China let out the bulk of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. A government effort to reduce the release of pollutants domestically and to make a bilateral reduction treaty with China would go far to improve the global situation. And with the exception of the odd moment of dissonance on a film set, Murray, unlike the characters he plays, seems fundamentally happy too. His choosiness allows him to spend the bulk of his time as a stay-at-home father to his six sons, ages 3 to 22. "It's my favorite gig," he says, "but it's a little early to say how I've done. ...screening of one of Prina’s short films, Vinyl II in the Carpenter Center auditorium. Filmed at the Getty museum in Los Angeles (it was originally commissioned by the museum), Vinyl II could almost be described as a kind of extremely slow-paced music video. The bulk of the film depicts a group of musicians playing a score written by Prina himself while sitting in two of the Getty’s galleries, punctuated with shots of the baroque paintings hanging on the gallery walls. Most of the students I talked to afterward found the film?...
