But the caricature painted by the media goes beyond portraying a bunch of non-voters. Rather than approaching youth as disenchanted individuals who are otherwise serious, the media paints young people as irresponsible and out of touch: Generation Y, as in why bother? The reaction of campaigns to this message has been to try to pander to youths' perceived greed for entertainment...

We watched testifying staffers, the Energy Secretary who presided over the loss of our nuclear secrets behind a copy machine, the desperate members of the Clinton spin machine, George Stephanopoulos trying to look old, Lloyd Bentsen trying to look young and a first family that was to "Married with Children" what the Kennedy's were to "Camelot." We haven't had so much fun since before Henry Kissinger left public life. Clinton's team was fun to watch...
...goes on, and the audience accepts that it goes on, because Soderburgh shows us the alternative--not a happy-go-lucky bunch of youngsters smoking up and getting the munchies, but the descent of the drug czar's teenage daughter into a cocaine/heroine hell. He shows us the people who profit from selling self-destruction to a bored, insensate American upper class, but he also shows us that those people are ruthless and evil, and that someone--even the woefully weak agents of our criminal justice system--needs to stand against them...
