Although his latest project is located in Singapore, not Shanghai, famed Hong Kong restaurateur Calvin Yeung named his first overseas venture One on the Bund, after Shanghai's legendary riverbank - with good reason. The goateed Yeung, who is also a chef and a self-taught interior designer, says that when he first saw the waterfront building that houses his restaurant, "I thought it reminded me of Shanghai." That could be because it's flanked by colonial-era buildings with an upcoming casino resort and new financial hub just meters away...
...Bund seats 350 diners and is located in Clifford Pier (circa 1933; named after then governor Sir Hugh Clifford) - a building that had not been in use since ferry operations to Singapore's Southern Islands relocated in 2006. The installation has been sensitively done: when building the restaurant, the 45-year-old Yeung was required by local authorities to avoid tampering with the beloved colonial structure - especially the arched trusses that span almost the entire length of the building. ...Tigers had built an earth bund, several meters high, around a narrow 12-km (7.5-mile) no-fire zone on the eastern shores of the Mulaithivu lagoon and, according to reports from the area, had set up gun encampments every 30 meters (98 feet) or so along it. According to Laxman Hulugalle, Director General of the Sri Lankan defense ministry's Media Centre for National Security, after overnight fighting, troops captured a small stretch of the fortified earth bund on the morning of April 20, and between 25,000 and 30,000 civilians trapped behind the bund streamed through...
...Shanghai not long ago, I took a walk from my hotel along Nanjing Road to the Bund, the promenade on the banks of the Huangpu where visitors from China's hinterland gather to gaze across the river, awestruck, at the ultramodern skyscrapers of Pudong that have transformed the city's skyline in not much more than a decade. It wasn't what was on the far side, though, that got my attention: it was the traffic on the river itself, great container ships, chuffing lighters, bulk carriers, every sort of waterborne vessel you could imagine carrying every imaginable cargo, churning...
...Asian societies, too, has had profound implications. At the most basic level, it has encouraged a wide-eyed admiration. In 2004, the World Bank held a global conference on poverty reduction in Shanghai, and I remember press reports describing the scene each evening. African delegates would gather on the Bund and look over the brown waters of the Whampoa to Pudong, gazing in wonder on an unearthly tableau of neon and skyscrapers built on marshes and paddyfields in not much more than 10 years...
