...year contract offering them raises of up to 10.5%. Cathay had lost the last couple of rounds: two years ago it backed down from a plan to cut employee salaries in the middle of the Asian economic crisis. And last year, pilots refused to work longer hours amid unexpectedly buoyant business. This summer the company decided to go all out to win. After talks broke down the pilots announced a disruptive ploy called "work to rule," which meant they would do all the safety checks in the pilot's manual, word-by-word, even if it delayed takeoffs and gummed...

...capacious, its narrative route too extended, the shift in tone (from suburban domestic to rural nightmare to urban archaeology) too ornery to make the film a flat-out wowser of the E.T. stripe. A.I. boasts a beautiful central performance--Haley Joel Osment, 13, plays David with a kind of buoyant gravity--and a canny turn by Jude Law as a robo-stud, while other actors are wan. The film is bold, rigorous and sentimental by turns, and often all at once, as should be expected from a two-man movie where both have strong wills to match their great gifts...

...been "praying Jabez" as a kind of evangelical mantra ever since. What he appears to have found most attractive is the prayer's expansiveness. Evangelical life abounds in thou shalt nots and stresses humility before God. By contrast, Jabez's demand that the deity "bless me indeed" seems buoyant and liberating. Reading the volume's back-cover blurb ("Do you want to be extravagantly blessed by God?"), one might even imagine that Wilkinson is selling Prosperity Theology, a widespread if superficial gospel that amounts to praying for dollars. This turns out not to be the case. The riches...
