...natural in man to wish to perpetuate himself in the world, and originality of this sort is often his only resource. Always well-meant, and often valuable, still it imposes a difficult burden on those who come after. A will is the most real kind of ghost, one which it is hard to "lay". Any endowed organization has had its difficulties with clauses made to fit one set of conditions, and made inflexible against all change by their binding nature. A simple phrase, "at the discretion of the administrator", makes a will adaptable to circumstances, but testators are sometimes careless...

...strange algebraic symbol probably, one expressive of some fearful incantation or curse known only to astrologers and other practitioners of the Black Arts. Accordingly to learn that this sign is merely the name of an English course is a matter of great surprise. But why burden an innocent course with such a handle as 73 hf? There are not 73 English courses in Harvard, including even that immense number of mythical courses offered every year but the present. The christening of English 73 must have taken place on the roulette wheel...

...into our lives of great perplexity, and have spread a feeling of uncertainty and of dissatisfaction with conditions. This uncertainty is going to result in votes against the party in power. One of the great problems which we have is taxation, and we have now to meet the new burden of our huge war debt. New taxation legislation must necessarily affect someone adversely, and create a feeling against the party in power. As the Democrats were blamed for perplexities arising out of the War and administrative difficulties, so now the Republican party which is in power will be blamed...

...large sum but for a widespread contribution. It is out of the question to raise the full amount $150,000 or even a moderate portion of it, here in the University. What can be accomplished is to convince the alumni, on whom the burden must fall, that their larger contributions will not be made in vain. They must be made to realize the genuine desire which now exists among undergraduates for an accessible place to play golf. Mere signing of a petition, or expressions of enthusiasm in print, will not carry full conviction. An actual contribution to the fund, however...
