...country's 3 million voters cast ballots for the Progress Party, which has been very critical of the way the welfare state has functioned. Its leader, Mogens Glistrup, 48, an iconoclastic Copenhagen millionaire lawyer, who is now under indictment for tax fraud, promised to "fire one bureaucrat every ten minutes for the next three or four years." With 28 of the Folketing's 179 seats, the Progressives became the second largest faction in that body, after the Social Democrats' 46 seats and ahead of the Liberals' 22 seats. ...usual backslapping, smiling politician. Born in Morocco of French parents, he did not come to France to live until he was 18. He graduated from the prestigious National School of Administration, and until Pompidou appointed him Foreign Minister in 1973, he had spent his entire career as a bureaucrat. He is quiet, shakes hands with a stiffness in his right arm from a war wound, and rarely smiles, except for a tight-lipped grin after he has made a clever...

...middle-level CIA agent recently leaked information on one possible successor to Thieu, a trade union bureaucrat named Buu. A report issued this month by a group of South Vietnamese senators documents how Buu's organization is funded by the "American Institute for Free Labor Development" and the CIA, the same agencies which bribed Chilean unions to oppose Allende. Buu's group in turn controls the "Peasant-Labor Party," which ironically lacks either peasants or laborers in the party hierarchy. Buu knows George Meany personally and after an expose this summer in the German weekly Der Spiegel...

...Orwellian irony in the making: be cause of the negative symbolic value of George Orwell's frightening vision of the future as contained in his novel 1984, a good many professional prophets would just as soon not refer directly to the year of the same name. No bureaucrat, how ever, is ready to confess such fears. A TIME correspondent went last week to that great clearinghouse of U.S. Government statistics, the Office of Management and Budget, and was told, "No body has anything against 1984; 1985 is a good round date, that...
