Professor Torrey was born on August 29, 1871 at Burlington, Vermont. He was educated at the University of Vermont, being graduated in 1893. Three years later he received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Harvard, and the following year from the University of Vermont. He was an instructor and assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Vermont. In 1905 he was appointed by the Harvard Corporation assistant professor of chemistry, which position he held until his death...
