Seen close up for the first time last week, the ecological damage inflicted on the tiny country turns out to be worse than anyone dared imagine. Instead of the 300 burning oil wells predicted in worst-case scenarios, virtually all the country's 1,000 wells were wrecked or set on fire, and 600 or so are still ablaze. For those who live under the resulting thick, sooty clouds, day seems like night and temperatures are 11 degreesC (20 degreesF) cooler than in places where the sky is clear. Some of the well fires could burn for years, spewing...
...dependable substitute for gasoline is in full gear. Chrysler recently unveiled a battery-powered prototype of its popular minivan. GM is experimenting with automobiles that run on methanol, a form of alcohol that comes from such sources as coal and wood. United Parcel Service recently tested delivery trucks that burn propane rather than gasoline. Mercedes-Benz has developed a prototype car that runs on hydrogen...
Perhaps the most promising alternative is compressed natural gas, or CNG. Although it yields lower mileage than gasoline, CNG is 20% cheaper overall because it burns cleaner and causes less wear on engine parts. The U.S. is virtually self-sufficient in the fuel, supplying nearly 95% of its needs. Modifying cars to run on CNG is much easier than adapting them to electric power: through replacement of the carburetor and fuel system, existing autos can be converted to burn CNG at a cost of about $2,000. Carmakers can build CNG-fueled vehicles from scratch without major retooling. GM plans...
That joyful scene was staged amid the ruins of what had been a gleaming metropolis. It was backlighted by towering orange flames on the horizon where hundreds of oil wells, torched by fleeing Iraqis, continued to burn and block the midday sun with huge curtains of dense black smoke. The eerie pall was a visible symbol of the dark ordeal Kuwait had lived through during the Iraqi occupation and a final, horrifying week of murder, kidnapping and destruction...
...tanks could pour through. Allied planes began using napalm for the first time in the war, dropping it on oil- filled trenches in front of Iraqi positions. The Iraqis had planned to set fire to the oil when allied troops tried to cross; the napalm was apparently intended to burn it off prematurely so that the fires would be out when the coalition troops arrived. The Iraqis, in a final nose-thumbing gesture, lobbed more Scud missiles at Israel only minutes before the deadline...
