"I believe that all thinking people must be ready to change with the times," Suu Kyi told Burton in the unfurnished front room of her lakeside home. "I hope that in the last six years they realize that what we want is change for the good of the nation, and that by cooperating they too may be able to bring about what is good for the nation." Outside...

...champion of the southeast Asian country's democracy movement -- from six years of house arrest. As hundreds of supporters gathered in a light rain outside her home in Rangoon, historically laconic military leaders merely noted that her sentence had expired. "No one expected this to happen," saysTIME's Sandra Burton, in the Burmese capital. "The move indicates far greater confidence on the part of the junta that neither Suu Kyi nor the people will rush to overthrow it." The series' first two films, directed by Tim Burton, were the top summer hits of 1989 and 1992; Batman Returns was also a wonderful film. Joel Schumacher, director of Forever, hasn't Burton's creepy poetic vibes, but in The Client he showed real storytelling talent. He also wanted to give the series a fresh look, with a new Batman-Val Kilmer for Michael Keaton-in a new costume and car, both retooled in fine Corinthian leather. Even Gotham gets a make-over...

...Beijing lack strategic vision. They also contend that public hectoring and flip-flops over human rights, nuclear nonproliferation and now Taiwan have created dissonance in China policy: a U.S. trade official talks of "an orchestra in which each player plays his own music, and there is no conductor." Cautions Burton Levin, director of the Asia Society in Hong Kong: "If the U.S. harangues, it strengthens the hands of the xenophobes in China and weakens those forces that want to move toward a less authoritarian society. The U.S. can't improve China's values by stamping its feet." That is particularly...

Then, in the late 1980s, came the proposed parking area and Weeks' concern. His 1988 foray made it clear that the tomb wasn't as dull as Burton had thought. Elaborate carvings covered the walls and referred to Ramesses II, whose own tomb was just 100 ft. away. The wall inscriptions on the companion crypt mentioned two of Ramesses' 52 known sons, implying some of the royal offspring might have been buried within. And then came last week's astonishing announcement...
