...World War I, the deadly dance of the prices doubled the war bill of the nation. With this grim lesson in mind, the Administration last April appointed bushel-bellied Leon Henderson as Price Boss. Henderson had no real authority to enforce his price ceilings-or at best, questionable authority. But he had seen the interrelated whole of U.S. industry from the topmost contemporary vantage point, the TNEC's two years and nine months of study. Backed by public opinion, Henderson kept prices down by bluff and loud talk...

...Ringside Maisie" is pure maize but this particular bushel of corn is pretty amusing fodder. Ann Sothern, the Brooklyn bonfire, wanders into a boxer's training camp and ends up by marrying his manager. Meanwhile all the old hokum about the lighter with a soul who goes blind, etc., etc., etc. occurs with Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom and other pugilistic debris to provide an interesting background. A bit below the pan of the Maisie series, the show is still one of the best grade...

...Stadium management makes no bones about truckling to the soloist trade. It hires soloists by the bushel, and ladies out Tableaus sums for them. As a result--and here is the rub--it must budget, and in so doing cheats the public with second and third-rate conductors. The substitution of some first-rank conductors like Rodzinski and Beecham for the interminable Golschmanns, Smalleness, and Von Hoogstrateus, (who obviously have only got their jobs through Curuegie Hall politics), would take the curse off a concert without soloists, and the public might begin to go in for Brahms and Becthoven...

Since this year's low, soybean prices have risen 75% to $1.70 a bushel, despite the record crop. Chief reasons: 1) demand for soybean oils in Lend-Lease's fats-for-Britain program; 2) low cotton-crop estimates foreshadow a low production of cottonseed oils. As a cash crop soybeans this year will almost equal potatoes, surpass citrus fruits, surpass in fact any other crop except the big four, cotton, wheat, corn, tobacco...

...Senator John Hollis Bankhead advised farmers to keep their cottonseed off the market until prices hit $60 a ton (last week's price: about $47, an 18-year high). Wheat farmers have withheld so much (about 40%) of this year's bumper 950,000,000 bushel crop that the conservative Bureau of Agricultural Economics last week turned tipster, predicted wheat would jump another icxf; a bushel within a few months. It now figures 1941 U.S. cash farm income at $10,500,000,000, 15% above last year and the highest since...
