...that day forward traffic to info.cern.ch rose exponentially, from 10 hits a day to 100 to 1,000 and beyond. Berners-Lee had no idea that he had fired the first shot in a revolution that would bring us home pages, search engines, Beanie Baby auctions and the dotcom bust, but he knew that something special had happened. "Of all the browsers people wrote," Berners-Lee remembers, "and all the servers they put up, very few of them were done because a manager asked for them. ...were examined over sandwiches, the LMDC's site committee, which Betts heads, voted 43, with one abstention, in favor of Vinoly. But the next day their recommendation was overruled by Pataki and Bloomberg, who had long favored Libeskind's plan. Betts says that's fine. "Nobody was Vinoly or bust," he insists...
...Libeskind or bust. Though born in Poland, he's a U.S. citizen. He likes to remind people that at 13 he came to the U.S. with his parents, Holocaust survivors, arriving on a ship that glided past the Statue of Liberty. Sailor Martin, the nasty tattooed man, doesn't have eyes, just two black slashes...

In December 2001, the government sent police from Hanoi to arrest Cam at his mistress's house, and then widened the net, trumpeting the nation's biggest organized-crime bust. Since Cam's tentacles reached far into the government, the case simultaneously became Vietnam's biggest corruption crackdown. Two of the 18 government officials on trial with him this month were members of the ?lite Central Committee, the Communist Party's 150-member main decision-making body. One of the accused, Bui Quoc Huy, was Ho Chi Minh City's police chief...
