...Paris swarmed to his play, and the theater world soon caught up. After a disastrous U.S. premiere in Miami, Godot had a respectable Broadway run with E.G. Marshall as Vladimir and Bert Lahr as Estragon. Other beguiling star tandems never quite materialized: Alec Guinness and Ralph Richardson in London; Buster Keaton and Marlon Brando on Broadway. In the '60s, Steve McQueen wanted to star in a Godot film. Beckett declined...
Some silent stars, like Buster Keaton, swam outside the Hollywood mainstream. Fairbanks, though, was Hollywood--in his itch for control (he produced his films and wrote most of them), in his loving to be loved, in his taste for pricey grandeur. He ordered the biggest sets (Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood), the highest budgets (The Thief of Bagdad), the first epic film shot wholly in Technicolor (The Black Pirate). The put-upon pooch will then save Wallace in a breathless climax whose brio and ingenuity shame any live-action thriller...
There are countless examples of the underdogs winning out over fat cats who were overconfident and lazy, who just didn't work as hard. Take the case of Buster Douglas, Jr., who beat a seemingly indomitable but actually flabby and pariah-surrounded Mike Tyson one glorious night in Japan five years ago. Buster then was bitten by the overconfidence bug that bit Tyson, and was knocked silly by Evander Holyfield. (Buster has since ballooned to a 400-pound man with dread locks. "I always hated fighting," he says...
