...want, when they want to see them. Subscribers interested in Tonya Harding, for example, might order up both the 30-second summary that aired on the nightly news and the 45-minute press conference held by her ex-husband's lawyer that was carried on CNN. By pressing a button on their TV remote control, they could even have TIME magazine's analysis of the story printed out by an ink-jet printer attached to their cable...
...newer exhibits make some use of modern technology. The Sound Production Morphology Exhibit allows visitors to hear dolphin and whale sounds at the touch of a button, and complementary computer-generated graphs display their frequencies. The real thrill of the museum, however, lies in exhibits which haven't been touched for years...
...scenic design, by John Arnone, is appealing once your eyes adjust to the glare. The stage is framed by a painted screen decorated with cheesy '50s icons (tail fins, an "I Like Ike" button) and the omnipresent numerals 1-9-5-7. (That's the year, get it?) Howell Binkley's lighting comes in the same day glo hues, and succeeds most notably when the choreography is silhouetted against bright orange and yellow backlight. Placing second in the Nationals in Detroit two weeks ago was a triumph. On the ice she shows the kind of bravura...
...athletes in this charmed circle, it's a great life if you don't weaken. Dick Button marvels at the number of competitions (Skate America, Skate Canada, Piruetten), plus the tours that clog a skater's year. "The pressure is never off," he says, "especially in an Olympic year." Button is skeptical of the demands made by the three-month-long, 59-city Tom Collins tour (April 11 to July 12), but in fact this is the ambition of every first-class competitive skater. Collins, the impresario, picks mostly Olympic and national medalists, along with some other favorites...
