Before the opening performance buxom Neapolitan Soprano Maria Caniglia was found crawling about the Met's splintery stage in search of bent nails. Reason: An old Neapolitan superstition that bent nails mean luck. She found a half dozen, toted them about with her while she sang the part of Desdemona in the season's opener, Otello. Thus equipped, Soprano Caniglia sang lustily, was lustily choked in the last act by Tenor Giovanni Martinelli (Otello) who finally covered her face with a pillow. ...gesture, Dictator Batista was invited by his counterpart in name only, U. S. Chief of Staff Malin Craig, to attend last week's celebration of Armistice Day at Arlington National Cemetery. Boss Batista eagerly left Cuba for the first time in his 37 years, turned up with his buxom lady, several aides and a trunkful of uniforms. The other is a mousy, 17-year-old waitress who knows the weak point in Pinkie's alibi. To shut the waitress' mouth, Pinkie cold-bloodedly makes love...
...years after his death, would prove to be the city's champion child-producer. A bachelor, Mr. Millar was not experienced enough to foresee a tie. After 17 months of legal haggling, the prize money of Toronto's famed "stork derby" was awarded last week. Four buxom, prolific, poor mothers, each having produced nine children during the ten-year period, split the money between them, received checks for $100,000 each. Out of this one mother must return to the Toronto Relief Administration $5,696 another $2,314, loaned during the tough-going days. With two mothers...
