...late Trudeau has been breaking his self-imposed silence, and on behalf of a controversial project: Rap Master Ronnie, a cabaret revue lampooning the Reagan Administration. Begun in 1984 as an off-Broadway lark, the show has been staged in nine cities, including Washington, where it opened in October and has been extended into next year. Trudeau constantly revises, adding for Washington a parody of bargaining with the Soviets for the release of American Journalist Nicholas Daniloff. "I feel passionate about this," says Trudeau. "I want people to think about events during the Reagan years that we tend to forget...
...assassination and the Viet Nam War, then perk up for so-fine evocations of Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and Janis Joplin. The '60s and some of its prime shakers are dead, but the decade's survivors figure they can revive it by repackaging it. Beehive is a cherry Coke cabaret show with plenty of fizz, American Graffiti without the plot, Dreamgirls with no production values, an oldies station at $27.50 a ticket...
...quality and its discontents; she is the daughter of Screenwriters Phoebe and Henry Ephron, who put funny endearments into the mouths of Tracy and Hepburn (Desk Set) and adapted Carousel for Hollywood. Pat Patton's staging abounds with campy cabaret numbers, menacing slapstick and chorus-girl goofiness, and centers on a superbly acted struggle for the heroine between a sinuous mobster (Castellanos) and a cheery hoofer (Brian Tyrrell). Broadway celebrates the gutsy traditions and restorative powers of the theater. Some 2,500 miles off Broadway, Ashland does the same, season after season...
...Drama. "Yale was a joyless experience," she says. "It almost destroyed my career. I had so much confidence when I got there, and so little when I left. For six months they wouldn't cast me in a play, and I was forced to perform in the campus cabaret." Poor, lucky Sigourney. For it was there she teamed up with Christopher Durang, who would soon torch off-Broadway with the blazing sitcom absurdism of Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You and The Marriage of Bette and Boo. Says Durang, 37: "I'd written an anarchist musical called Better...
