...ministries. Most significantly, Mugabe and his Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF) would retain control of the army and national defense, while Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) would be in charge of daily operations and home affairs. Tsvangirai considers the latter cabinet essential given its control of the police, who were tools for Mugabe’s suppression of Tsvangirai supporters in the weeks before the presidential runoff. They were so violent that Tsvangirai was forced to withdraw even though he had won the initial popular vote. Mugabe has rejected this balance of power...

With the financial crisis continuing to threaten the nation’s economy, the selection of a nominee for Secretary of the Treasury might very well be the most important cabinet appointment facing Barack Obama as he prepares for his first term in office. The Obama administration will need a Treasury secretary who possesses the creativity, economic acumen, and leadership experience to propose and effect bold and innovative economic policies that will help the U.S. avoid a deep economic recession.Given the urgent need for a candidate with these strengths, it is disappointing that Eliot University Professor Lawrence H. In 1992, Bill Clinton took his time choosing his staff, and he focused much of that time on the Cabinet, believing the White House staff to be secondary. His eventual selection of personal friends from Arkansas, like his first chief of staff, Mack McLarty, proved that Washington outsiders aren't so good at running Washington...

Indeed, if one message was prevalent despite the formal, White House-esque atmosphere, it was: I am not president yet, I'm not rushing into anything, and I won't be baited into saying anything I will regret. From picking his cabinet ("I think it's very important in all these key positions, both in the economic team and the national security team, to - to get it right and - and not to be so rushed that you end up making mistakes.") to getting involved in economic policy during the lame duck session, Obama's answer time and again...
