Like dry martinis and folk music, another icon of the 1960s is coming back: the big, long car. Among several 1989 models that General Motors unveiled last week was the new Buick Riviera, fully 11 in. longer than the 1988 version. The Cadillac division's new Fleetwood and DeVille models are as much as 9 in. longer than last year's cars, and they even sport a discreet version of their old tail fins...
Critics of the rent-a-judge system call it Cadillac justice, which lets more affluent litigants evade the problems of the judicial system. "The elite abandoning a public system in decay ensures that it will never be improved," argues Robert Gnaizda of Public Advocates, a San Francisco public interest group. Critics also charge that rent-a-judging lures experienced jurists into early retirement to collect the combination of public pensions and private fees. Another complaint against private judging is that it lets corporations and other litigants shield their doings from public scrutiny. In normal civil- court proceedings, hearings are generally...
Forgive George Shultz if he is eager to get home. After the Secretary of State flew to La Paz last week, suspected drug lords detonated a bomb as his motorcade drove into the Bolivian capital. The dynamite blast missed Shultz's armored Cadillac but shattered the windows of several cars, including the one carrying his wife Helena. Unintimidated, Shultz delivered a speech that praised the government's new anticocaine measures...
...farmers waste water by choice. Marc Reisner, author of Cadillac Desert, an incisive history of water development in the West, observes that subsidized water is "so cheap the farmers can't afford to conserve it." Ten miles west of Phoenix, for example, Mike Duncan, 38, would have to spend considerably more to irrigate his cotton if he were to use water-saving drip tubes. "If I farmed in the Coolidge area, where water is $80 an acre-foot," Duncan says, "I'd most seriously look at using drip irrigation." Instead, Duncan gets water at the federally subsidized rate...
...company most affected is General Motors. The NHTSA, which has been looking into 573 reports of acceleration incidents in H-body cars (Buick LeSabres and Oldsmobile Delta 88s, for example) since last September, will now examine 110 accounts of similar problems in C-body cars (including Cadillac DeVilles, Buick Electras and Olds 98s). The H-body cars have been blamed for 343 accidents that resulted in one death and 145 injuries, while claims concerning C-body cars involved 67 accidents and 43 injuries. Since 1985, about 700,000 H-body cars and 1.4 million C-body models have been sold...
