...Kiefer's allegories work with such clarity. When he felt the urge to be didactic ten or so years ago, he could be remarkably opaque. Ways of Worldly Wisdom, 1976-77, attempts to create a whole genealogy of German nationalism starting with Arminius, who in A.D. 9 wrecked Augustus Caesar's policy of German occupation by destroying three Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest. As a primal hero of German history, Arminius was a great Nazi favorite, but here Kiefer conflates him with awkward portraits of all manner of later German "descendants" like Blucher, who fought against Napoleon; Schlieffen, whose...
...does have force, treachery and charisma on his side. There is a funny scene in which a Shakespearean actor (Richard Howells) coaches Ui in speech and movement by running him through Marc Antony's speech in Julius Caesar. At first Raphael's imitation of Howells' already exaggerated enunciation and movement makes him look like John Cleese's Minister of Silly Walks. ...Here he brightened, for he likes the risk of live performance. "You have to perform now and then, to keep stage fright under control." He waves away the idea of a talk show as "death by interview." What does interest him is the kind of television variety show Sid Caesar, Ed Sullivan and Milton Berle used to do. He is not really comfortable with TV; there is an army of people to deal with, and someone like himself, who communicates in silences, isn't good at that. Still...
