These paintings start the train of American fantasy that will lead to San Simeon and Caesars Palace. They are wildly corny but in a weird way convincing: they bite off so much more than they can chew that you can't help assenting to them. And the target of their moralizing is none other than Andrew Jackson, who Cole (and many of his patrons) feared was becoming an American Caesar, filling the once virtuous republic with the corruptions of opportunism. It seems that Cole the landscapist and Cole the magniloquent history painter were not, as was once thought, different artists...

...lyrics stand out in part because the book of this musical is so good. Joseph Dougherty's script hysterically recreates the world of 1950s television comedy a la Sid Caesar and "Your Show of Shows." Much of the action of My Favorite Year takes place in and around the offices of "Comedy Cavalcade," the show for which Benjy writes, giving Dougherty the opportunity to toss off one-liners and badinage worthy of a much better show than the one he's stuck with...

...link of Jewish power to black social misery. Most Americans believe Minister Farrakhan praised Adolf Hitler and, by implication, condoned the evils done to the Jewish people. Yet this is simply wrong. As Minister Farrakhan has noted on many occasions, his statement that Hitler was "wickedly great" -- like Alexander, Caesar, Napoleon and Stalin -- meant that Hitler was famous for his pernicious ability to conquer, destroy and dominate others. Furthermore, Hitler hated black people with great passion. And given Minister Farrakhan's devotion to the cause of black freedom, he would not claim that Hitler was morally great. Nevertheless, the mainstream...
