...solemn in this joyous week, Netherlanders were rocking with laughter in their cafés at Dutch wags who thought up elaborate jokes like this: A man keeps his hat on as others take theirs off to toast Princess Beatrix, then, just as people begin to give him angry looks, takes off his hat and reveals he is wearing a "baby" hat underneath exactly resembling its "parent...

...campaign purposes soon had Brazil's Leftists noisily at the throat of Brazil's green-shirted Fascist Integralistas, whose leader Plinio Salgado wears a Hitler mustache and advocates in misty Portuguese a "corporative State." Last fortnight more serious trouble appeared. The Departmento Nacional do Café, which has destroyed $638,750,000 worth of Brazil's surplus coffee to keep up the world price, announced that its deficit of $72,000,000 was becoming unmanageable, threw up its efforts at stabilization altogether...

Five years ago Alois set up an unpretentious little café near Berlin's Charlottenburg station. The place took on the air of an officers' club in the early days of the Hitler regime. There burly Schutzstaffel would show off their blonde, elegant ladies. Alois' little café prospered to such an extent that last week he opened a showy modern restaurant, the Alois Tearoom, at No. 3 Wittenberg-Platz, near Berlin's fashionable west end. "I call my place the Alois because I do not want to advertise with the name," Alois admitted, but three...

Approximately ten years ago while in a Los Angeles café with the late Herbert Somborn, ex-husband of Gloria Swanson, approximately eight mulatto dancing girls appeared. Mr. Somborn exclaimed: "What beautiful jalopies!" Pressing him for information, he stated that a jalopy was anything half black and that the word originated in a certain part of Africa, where plurals are unknown, and a jalopy is a African half black geese...

With the possible exception of the mosque in Paris, which charges five francs entrance fee and contains two cafés, the Nizamiah Mosque-designed on Oriental lines by Sir Brumwell Thomas-will be the finest in any non-Moslem land. For U. S. Mohammedans there are two places for formal worship, a small, three-story frame building in Brooklyn and a temple in Michigan City, Ind., whose 80 Moslems plan to build a mosque when they acquire enough money. Elsewhere Moslems who cannot gather in large groups are content to worship in one another's homes. Singapore...
