...candidates for the University baseball nine bagan working last Monday, about thirty-five men responding to Captain Quinby's call. This number is exclusive of members of the freshman class. The work is confined to the daily runs and to practice in picking up grounders in the cage. The batteries began light practice yesterday in order that the pitchers might get their arms in condition as soon as possible. ...varsity baseball candidates have now been working in the cage for about six weeks under the supervision of Captain Dean and Coach Bond. When the men first came out about one hundred candidates presented themselves but the number has slowly been reduced to about thirty-two, omitting the battery candidates. So far, the two most promising freshmen in the squad are Litchfield and Thompson. The former comes from Brooklyn, where he played on the Brooklyn Latin School, and the latter from St. Mark's School. ...spoke of the use of the room in the basement of the Gymnasium by the candidates for the Mott Haven Team. We have unintentionally done the Mott Haven Team an injustice, and we acknowledge and regret the mistake. The room mentioned, which last year was used as the cage for the practice of the Freshman baseball candidates, had been used this year by the classes in gymnasium work and not by the Mott Haven candidates.
