...take the slurred toasts and speeches, so she started wondering around the manicured grounds in search of posh outhouses. When she bumped into one of the hot security guys, Dr. Know started a party of her own. There's just something about a man with a walkie talkie ("cake in four minutes, cake in four. over") to get a girl all a twitter. Besides, that '80s music made Dr. K want to shout, shout...

...half-bottles of our chosen wine, and generously offered us glasses on the house. The entrees that were available were admirably prepared and proved far less saucy than the appetizers. Grilled Beef Sirloin ($26) was cooked perfectly, medium rare, and served atop a savory potato and wild mushroom cake, accompanied by a sharp rocquefort sauce and tangy onion marmalade. Wilted greens lightened the deliciously rich dish. Veal Brisket ($23) was entirely devoid of grease without being desiccated, matched by soft roast pearl onion polenta. ...uneccentric personality. As a baritone, Smith has drawn obvious comparisons to Billy Eckstine and Johnny Hartman. But whereas those singers can sometimes sound mesmerized by the sheer resonance of their own vocal cords, Smith has a more nimble sense of phrasing--he's rich yet light, the flourless chocolate cake of a Weight Watcher's dream. Soon after my arrival there was the inevitable rush to the serving table, replete with the typical luau spread: somen salad, lomi lomi salmon, sushi, kalua pig and cabbage, teriyaki beef, chicken long rice, dimsum, rice, haupia, coconut cake, and chi chi dango. Kama'aina (island locals) were disappointed to find that pudding-like poi was not shipped in, but otherwise the food was a success. People not familiar with the delicacies of Hawaii were encouraged to "just try everything." Even the police officers who were hired to oversee the event...

This crazy scene, one of Moscow's landmarks, was at its most surreal one Friday night a few weekends ago when Steele celebrated his birthday with the staff and patrons. As the kitchen rolled out a huge birthday cake, a 70-year-old babushka dressed scantily in tight green leather and swinging a green leather purse danced in the center of the bar. She was not part of the planned birthday festivities, however: a Russian film-maker was shooting a scene in which the Methuselan sex kitten was the main attraction. The people at the bar loved...
