On one night last week, a guard politely said, “Happy Birthday,” to a crew who had gathered with cake, music, and balloons in a first-floor nook to celebrate with a girl who would not leave Lamont under any circumstances. As long as students do not start burning books for 4 a.m. entertainment, then we feel that this conduct should remain unpunished. Students here are studious enough...
Next fall in Lamont, expect to see students sipping espresso and munching on carrot cake as they print off those last-minute essays. The third floor will have a whole new look, when the as-yet-unnamed café opens in the current Reference Room...
Whatever the name, come next year, students will be able to have their books, their coffee, their cake...
...only flee their desk for an hour, but we chose comfort food: a skillet of creamy baked eggs with undyed smoked haddock and spring onion, and a chicken-and-tarragon pie with mashed potatoes, greens and gravy. For dessert, we shared the strangely satisfying chocolate-and-beetroot cake. The service was friendly and efficient. But when I returned on a Sunday, the clientele was dressed down, and the staff moved at a far more leisurely pace. Sure beats the office canteen, though. canteen.co.uk
