Hostages to Burn. At guard-change time one afternoon last week, Myles and Smart directed half a dozen other hard cons in a fast grab of two guards, armed with .30-cal. rifles. Young Smart coldly shot Deputy Warden Theodore Rothe dead. Other ringleaders captured Warden Powell, used the telephone to lure in other staffmen, slashed one guard who resisted, locked up five stoolpigeon convicts, whipped up some 30 other inmates (total: 435) and armed them with knives and meat axes. At nightfall the warden talked one convict into helping him escape, quickly called for an attack by National Guardsmen...

From the long driveway that leads up to Iraq's huge, yellow-walled Ministry of Defense, a Bofors 40-mm. dual-barrel gun last week glared out at the city of Baghdad. Backing it up were leveled .50-cal. machine guns and recoilless rifles mounted on Jeeps. And even such visitors as got past the gun-toting sergeant at the ministry door were never more than a few feet from the business end of an automatic weapon. Padding up and down the corridors of the ministry, young officers of the Iraqi army kept firm hand on submachine guns...

Jimmy Dean plays the sensitive rebel role to its hilt, even managing fairly deftly the lines he has to mumble. Perhaps his toughest scene comes when Cal sees his father spurn his own birthday gift of $5000 and rejoice over his brother's "gift" of his engagement to Alma. A scene which could have been easily overplayed, it becomes an emotionally powerful piece of acting in a movie full of tortured glances and "sensitive" scenes...

Next to Jimmy Dean, Julie Harris's role is most demanding, and she carries it off with all her girlish charm. She romps with Aaron, comforts Cal, and appears as the most genuinely loveable character in the wagonload of "good" characters in "East of Eden...
