Chicago's sidewalk critics have their own ideas about art. Picasso's 50-ft. sculpture in the Civic Center Plaza, some say, looks like a baboon. As for the 53-ft. work by Alexander Calder to be placed near by, it appears, from the model, to resemble a butterfly with long feelers or a tulip bending its petals to earth. "Not at all," retorted the 74-year-old artist. "It's more like a flamingo." Even so, Calder has had to redesign part of the 10-ton carbon-steel structure. "This is supposed to be a stabile...
Paths of Glory, shot by Stanley Kubrick in 1957 (when he still cared about human affairs), is one of the most unillusioned films about war made in this or any other country. Derived from the French soldier mutinies in the Vimy Ridge in World War I, the screenplay by Calder Willingham and Jim Thompson is a paradigm of military disfunction. An ambitious general, intrigued by an offer of promotion, leads an already battle-weary battalion on a suicide mission. But the battalion falls back from their advance. Enraged, the general orders three men shot for cowardice as examples...
...number of reasons for this return to unadorned simplicity, not the least of which is crime. "Very few people wear diamonds now. The crime rate won't permit it," says Jane Norris, proprietress of Manhattan's Sculpture to Wear, which features the work of such masters as Calder, Picasso, Jean Arp and Man Ray as well as younger artists in its expensive ($50 to $3,500) collection. Her competitor Cynthia Bhaget of Amulets & Talismans agrees: "What's the sense of having diamonds if you have to keep them in the vault all the time?" Another factor...
...doghouse, according to the Ladies' Home Journal. The November issue contains a lengthy report on canine activity under the mastership of Presidents since 1951. Dog Lover Traphes L. Bryant, retired kennel keeper of the White House, reports that presidential pups have relieved themselves on carpets, Calder sculptures and on one memorable occasion, Jacqueline Kennedy. Dwight D. Eisenhower's Weimaraner infuriated her short-tempered master by chasing his golf balls. John F. Kennedy soothed himself during the Cuban missile crisis by taking time out to pet his daughter Caroline's Welsh terrier Charlie. Dog-lovingest President: Lyndon...
