...first four-year students--Caleb Cheeshahteaumuck and Joel Iacoomis (both class of 1665)--died before they could carry their Harvard education to the pulpit. A few days before Commencement, Joel was killed in a ship-wreck off Nantucket in which those who escaped drowning were "murthered by some wicked Indians of that place." His classmate Caleb survived long enough to become Harvard's only Indian College graduate--but died a few months later...

...claiming high prices for years, but the most recent success story in the art market deals with a contingent of sleepers who, like Rip Van Winkle, are returning to public esteem after a century of obscurity. American 19th century painting, from the works of such frontier reporters as George Caleb Bingham, whose pictures today bring as high as $250,000, to the early 20th century cityscapes of the Ashcan School, is enjoying a remarkable revival. Youngish up-and-comers also were rewarded with renewed votes of confidence. Vermont's Governor Philip Hoff, 42, elected in 1962 as the state's first Democratic chief executive since 1854, got a 57% majority this year; ticket-splitting Rhode Island voters re-elected Democratic Senator Claiborne Pell, 47, with...

Each immortalized the West he knew. Albert Bierstadt portrayed the Rockies; George Caleb Bingham the riverboatmen he first knew as a boy on the Missouri. To William Jacob Hays, the buffalo was already a hulking ghost in the dawn of a new day, while James Walker captured another vanishing species, the Spanish vaquero...
