Actor Charles Boyer's confident, romantic, tragic Pepe le Moko, and Joseph Spurin-Calleia's unhurried, calculating Slimane are cinememorable. So are Director John Cromwell's handling of this strangely fraternal, chaseless man hunt, and such intense scenes as that in which an informer (Gene Lockhart), backing away in terror as his executioners advance, jars a mechanical piano into action, dies to a ragtime tune. Joseph Calleia gets his oar in, but he is a friendly back-stabber this time. The solution to the mystery comes with the exposure in a most unconvincing manner of the least suspected person as the murderer. The program is worth taking in, however, because the feature picture is well acted and well photographed...

Lawyer Jack Moreno (Joseph Calleia) finds, soon after hanging out his shingle, that a successful criminal practice is impossible for him without the aid of the town's boss, Grady (Thomas Mitchell). After a succession of legal shellackings he talks business with Grady. But Moreno soon gets too big for Grady's taste and when the time comes to pick a new District Attorney, Moreno is cashiered. His fighting failure brings him to the attention of the Governor, who appoints him special investigator of some cases involving illegal stock promotion. Moreno pursues his investigation...
