Spooky: There's a whole sense of what, to me at least, is the late-twentieth-century culture. We've been seeing an aesthetic of what I call recombinant. Whether you're dealing with the visual, photography, sculpture, painting, you name it. But the appropriation an reminding of different elements has been in everything from Duchamp's early work, to Picasso, to John Heartfield, Hannah Hoch. Sampling is an extension of that tradition, but on another level it's what's been going on in African-American culture from mainly a jazz side of things...
Spooky: Both. When you ask people why they sample something, they sampled it because they like the original. And so they want to capture the vibe or the energy of that original. I call it the remixology of the psychology. Once people get to the point where anybody can reconfigure or change things around, that's when we'll finally get to the point where most DJs are already. But music and art are usually ahead of the rest of the culture. We're like signposts for a different route to be taken...
...hell." Well, maybe so. But they take a little bit of everything and make music with a fresh and original perspective--something rare and beautiful in the music industry. This band has always been a little different from everyone else, in a wonderful way. Don't ever call them standard or normal. At least, not yet. Raw energy and anger were more evident in earlier Cake music. Their two most widely-known songs, "The Distance" and "I Will Survive," stood out and were filled with intensity. Not so with this album. This new and somewhat optimistic energy has its value...
