I started a series called "Critical Beatdown," where I would ask people insulting questions. People really liked it, but it was discontinued because I just couldn't keep mustering up the courage to call up somebody and say: "You suck, and here's a list of reasons why you suck...

...call Lisa See a versatile writer would be to understate the case. She's best known for Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (2005) and Peony in Love (2007), best-selling novels set in China's past. But her debut work, On Gold Mountain: The One-Hundred-Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family, was a nonfiction account of Chinese immigrants to America, and she has written a trio of mysteries set in contemporary China. The bad news is that the insurgents escaped from the compound before U.S. forces had a chance to secure it. The Marines call the need to tolerate the frustration of such incidents "tactical patience." Just how patient Americans and their Commander in Chief will turn out to be with Stan McChrystal's new way of fighting the Afghan war remains to be seen...

Then there's the nature of the attacks: crude and essentially harmless. Cyberexperts call them denial-of-service (DOS) attacks, because they do no more harm than slow down or temporarily shut down networks. No sensitive government network was affected: the hackers (or lone hacker, since this could easily be the work of one person) only went after unrestricted, so-called public-facing sites. The assumption among some cyberexperts is that such unsophisticated attacks must come from an unsophisticated source...
