Harmony is the wan hope of age, the last dream to which it may reasonably aspire. Virtuosity is callow youth's callous expectation, the ambition toward which its bursting energy and blustering strength heedlessly compel it. That is why, dearly as they may love their offspring, parents of prodigies are so happy to see them off to college and career. May they achieve their hearts' desires - but please, God, on their own time...

...quickly after the Bay of Pigs, Kennedy went to Vienna for a summit with Nikita Khrushchev, who, judging Kennedy to be callow and inexperienced, ranted and bullied. ...show was a form of recall for the audience ("Hey, l remember that one!"), not only of the commercials but of performers who appeared in them 1 prior to becoming stars. As Alfredo's father, veteran Baritone Cornell MacNeil is the picture of implacable bourgeois respectability...

Most startling of all is the changing of Parsifal from a man (Michael Kutter) into a woman (Karen Krick) at the moment he rejects the erotic advances of the temptress Kundry (Edith Clever). This apparently signifies Parsifal's transformation from a callow youth to a hero, as Krick's grim, Joan of Arc visage emphasizes. Yet the device, like so many others in the film, is arbitrary. Wagner's opera is merely a pretext for the director, a frame on which to hang a murky, convoluted and, finally, not very original cultural...
