Meeting with some Republican congressional leaders last week, President Ford had some disquieting news from mystery-shrouded Cambodia, which the Khmer Rouge have all but hermetically sealed. The victorious Khmer Rouge forces, he said, had executed 80 high-ranking officers of the defeated Cambodian army. Then Ford added: "They killed the wives too. They said the wives were just the same as their husbands. This is a horrible thing to report to you, but we are certain that our sources are accurate." ...many as 130 South Vietnamese planes and helicopters, including F-5 fighter-bombers, transports and attack planes, were reported meanwhile to have reached the U.S.-run Utapao air-base in Thailand with about 2,000 soldiers and civilians; already some 1,000 Cambodian refugees were crowded into tents there. Alarmed, the Thai government announced that the refugees had to leave within 30 days and that it would return the planes to "the next government in South Viet Nam." ...only peephole view of life under the Khmer Rouge was at the Thai border opposite Cambodia. While life on the Cambodian side seemed normal at the start of the week-except for the presence of armed Communist soldiers in pajama-like uniforms-by week's end refugees were reporting that the Khmer Rouge had ordered the inhabitants of several towns to evacuate or risk being killed. Dozens of civilians were said to have been killed trying to flee, and other reports told of scattered executions...
Among the Cambodians who fled into Thailand, many were soldiers who brought along their U.S.-made equipment. Khmer Rouge demands that the equipment be returned-including armored personnel carriers and aircraft-led to tension between Thai and Communist border guards.
