Meeting with some Republican congressional leaders last week, President Ford had some disquieting news from mystery-shrouded Cambodia, which the Khmer Rouge have all but hermetically sealed. The victorious Khmer Rouge forces, he said, had executed 80 high-ranking officers of the defeated Cambodian army. Then Ford added: "They killed the wives too. They said the wives were just the same as their husbands. This is a horrible thing to report to you, but we are certain that our sources are accurate." While life on the Cambodian side seemed normal at the start of the week-except for the presence of armed Communist soldiers in pajama-like uniforms-by week's end refugees were reporting that the Khmer Rouge had ordered the inhabitants of several towns to evacuate or risk being killed. ...News Correspondent Lee Rudakewych and CBS News Stringer Denis Cameron, 44, who stayed behind in a largely futile attempt to organize an airlift of 400 Cambodian orphans.
