...script strewn with terrible puns ("Ban the bombe") and snickering double-entendre gags that make all the tired connections between food and sex. The arbitrary plot about a chef murderer hops from place to place on the slightest whim. It is little more than an excuse for cameo appearances by top European actors (Philippe Noiret, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Jean Rochefort) and restaurants (Paris' Tour d' Argent, London's Café Royal). The settings are sumptuously photographed by John Alcott (Barry Lyndon), but Ted Kotcheff s direction is lifeless. Were it not for the creepy musical score...

...director. But that's just how it wound up: filming more of the familiar amber-and-brown-soaked Texas landscapes doesn't seem a sufficiently compelling reason for making a movie, much less watching it. She's a nice Jewish girl with a great sense of humor (your mother would love her), but unfortuantely the movie is a little short in the plot department. There are some great cameo roles by well-known actors, however; Eli Wallach as the 60-year-old rabbi she has a brief affair with is one of the best. It's short and sweet, and, all in all, a fairly innocuous way to spend an evening...

They have plenty of help from some very well known human friends. "My kids gave me a proposition I couldn't resist-do it or else," says Telly Savalas of his cameo as the barroom brawler who is intolerant of warts. Other humanoid notables in the cast are Orson Welles, Bob Hope, Richard Pryor and Dom DeLuise. But to the Muppets' 235 million worldwide fans, the real heros of all this silliness are sensitive Kermit the Frog; his friend Fozzie, the stumbling bear; Miss Piggy, the porcine blonde caught achingly between show-biz ambition and true love...
