...TOOK three hours to get to that change. Ah, Wilderness has a leisurely pace. We don't meet Richard's beloved (Marsha B. McCoy, in a charming cameo) until the final act. But though "Ah, Wilderness" dawdles, it doesn't drag. Skilfully plotted, the events--though tame--transpire quickly, with many rapid scene changes. The constant familial banter speeds up the action; Ah, Wilderness doesn't seem as long as it is. Indeed, Daniel Sherman even gets away with lengthening one scene, in a nice directorial touch. ...adrift on the Nile at the same time as Moses. Never mind the hieroglyphic plot; just consider a cast that includes John Houseman, Madeline Kahn, John Ritter, Laraine Newman, James Coco, Jack Gilford, Dom DeLuise and Jack Albertson, along with Richard Pryor in a robes-and-rigamarole cameo as the pharaoh who puts Herschel down. ...powerful Senator Birney, whose friendship Tynan must betray. Alda's best moments come when he is Douglas's foil; Tynan feels contempt for the old man's politics but cannot help sympathizing when Birney lapses into senility and the Cajun tongue of his youth. Rip Torn plays a hilarious cameo as the libidinous buffoon, Sen. Ritner...

Along the way, such figures as Churchill, F.D.R., De Gaulle and Patton make their predictable cameo appearances. With the exception of Ian Richard son's Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, the famous faces are re-created in the crude broad strokes of Halloween masks; ABC rightly assumes that TV's chosen audience, the young, won't know the difference. Of all the Big Names the one who gets the shortest shrift is Mamie...
