...WHICH is disheartening, because Cannon Group, Inc., invested a large sum of money and a good bit of time putting it together. There is some good action footage from NHL games that includes nice cameo shots of Stan Mikita, Jean Beliveau, Gordie Howe, and Bobby Orr and an impressive brawl between the Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings that apparently was caught by accident...
What do these celebrated Steigian brain scramblers share with each other, and with most of the rest of the populace? They are conspicuously rational people doing their unlevel best to become less rational. In so doing they are playing out cameo roles in what Dr. David Cooper calls the "Madness Revolution." Cooper is another determined irrationalist, a psychiatrist who frequently envies his patients. Together with British Psychiatrist R.D. Laing, he has composed a sort of "power of positive nonthinking" -a popular ideology of madness. Works like The Politics of Experience (Laing) and The Death of the Family (Cooper) codify...
This is the one period of Napoleon's life (except, presumably, his conception) that could be filmed on a small budget; the war is over, thus effecting a great economy in props and stunt riders; all that is needed is a smallish garrison of redcoats, a brace of cameo parts (filled, with steely and rather contemptuous panache, by Sir Ralph Richardson and Sir John Gielgud), one or two sexual objects, a Napoleon, some rocks for the escape attempt and a sunset or two to be glowered at from cliff tops. Once these were assembled, Director Fielder Cook...
Gena Rowlands (Mrs. Cassavetes) brings a poignancy and complexity to Minnie that makes hers one of the memorable performances of the year. Cassel is full of dizzying charm and whirling-dervish energy. As always with Cassavetes' films, there are cameo roles so rich they could each make a movie in themselves: Val Avery as a loudmouthed date of Minnie's, Tim Carey as a poetry-spouting bum who disdains the movies ("A lot of lonely people sitting there looking up at a screen-what do I need that for?"). But almost stealing the show from these pros...
...gets a good workout. Christopher Gable, Tchaikovsky's decadent homosexual friend in The Music Lovers, is all chorus-boy charm as Twiggy's costar. Adrian is preposterously hammy as the preposterous ham of a repertory director. And who is that actress who turns in a fetching, funny cameo performance as the leading lady with the broken ankle? Why, it's-it's Glenda Jackson...
