Margot Fonteyn-Dame Commander of the British Empire,* star of Covent Garden's Royal Ballet, top ballerina of the Western world-cast a large, limpid brown eye through her camera view finder and pressed the little button. A flashbulb's white glare froze a busy scene against the black of a tropic night on the Gulf of Panama, in the Pacific. Dame Margot's husband Roberto ("Tito") Arias-scion of one of Panama's 20-odd leading families and recently (1955-58) his nation's Ambassador to the Court of St. James...
...last week, clutching a color insert torn from the current issue of Asahi Science Magazine (circ. 90,000), subscribers streamed into Canon Camera Co. service stations in five Japanese cities. One side of the insert bore color pictures of Niagara Falls and London's Big Ben clock tower, the other a solid block of brown ink. As the subscribers listened spellbound, the insert, placed face up in a table-top device called a Synchroreader, reproduced the awesome thunder of Niagara Falls, the clangorous toll...
...shepherd makes a convincing Christ, thanks largely to a brilliant device of Kazantzaki: until he most needs speech the shepherd stutters incomprehensibly, at which time his simple courage and sincerity is given tongue. The rest of the credit belongs to the director, who uses the camera throughout the first half of the film in a straight-on manner, getting dramatic effects from posing and from motion directly in and out or across the screen. His scenes resemble a series of carefully posed Renaissance paintings, narrating a Biblical story, for he focuses attention not by close-ups or dramatic angles...
...Tempest rages for more than two hours, probably cost more than $3,000,000 to produce-even though most of the big scenes were shot on the cheap in Yugoslavia. More than 3,000 Yugoslav peasants and some 4,500 cavalrymen of the Yugoslav army are employed as camera fodder. To top it off, nine big names (Silvana Mangano, Van Heflin, Viveca Lindfors, Geoffrey Horne, Oscar Homolka, Agnes Moorehead, Helmut Dantine, Finlay Currie, Vittorio Gassman) have been stacked on the billboards like a packet of insurance policies...
...painful, truthful exposition of human character. Before half an hour has gone by, it is apparent that Joe is an aggressive, self-seeking, foulmouthed, dirty-minded, ill-educated, mean-spirited little brute with more feeling in his wallet than in his heart. Yet it is also apparent, after the camera makes a visit to Joe's home town, that he has good reasons for being what he is; Dufton is a bombed-out, soot-seared 19th century factory slum. And something, perhaps the innocence of Joe's vulgarity, suggests that underneath his soot there is a soul...
