Crashed out on a pile of purple cushions in her trailer, the Woman of the Future does not look as though she could clean your clock. Yet as Max, the bioengineered heroine of Dark Angel, the dystopian sci-fi drama from Titanic's James Cameron, Jessica Alba sports skintight bodysuits and leather as, swaggering lean and feline (literally: Max has cat DNA), she dives through windows and KO's tough guys twice her size. Now, barefoot and swaddled in a massive black turtleneck and baggy jeans, it's as if she has been shrunk within her clothes...
...save for the occasional Uhura (Star Trek) or Lando Calrissian (Star Wars), sci-fi has tended to look as white as space is black. Dark Angel is an exception. Cameron and his co-creator, Charles Eglee, have created a year 2020 that is intriguing (economic depression, lawlessness and authoritarianism set in after terrorists sabotage America's computers). ...tried valiantly to up the ante on the gross-out schtick, the movie just never rose above its cheap tricks. Remember, Mary succeeded because of its pacing - in between the astounding sight gags, the Farrellys toyed with an ultrasweet romantic comedy that offered all kinds of weird nuances in Cameron Diaz' title character. Not only does Renee Zellwegger have zero personality as Irene, but the entire movie is one frenetic fart joke without even an instant of relief. And what's with the 'sticking [insert various objects here] up an ass' gags? The creators of the infamous hair...
...already seen Crowe's movie twice, raves about "the depth he has in his characters." Full disclosure: both men are friends of the writer-director. Cruise starred in Jerry Maguire, of course, and has signed on for Crowe's next film, Vanilla Sky, a thriller co-starring Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. Wenner's thumbs up is even more suspect. Not only is he portrayed briefly in the film as a Young Turk, he's played by Eion Bailey, the best-looking actor in the cast. Still, these pronouncements will receive no argument here...
