Despite the late-season tournament woes which dragged their record back below .500, the icewomen's marginal campaign has to be considered a success. Their 2-3-1 Ivy record kept them in that race to the finish, and the 6-11-1 overall mark included a number of impressive performances: a 3-0 whitewash of Colgate, a 6-1 romp past Bowdoin, a 3-2 squeaker over Yale and the heartbreaking 6-5 overtime loss...

Political observers see the introduction of standardized testing as the latest move in China's campaign to modernize rapidly through building up a technocratic, managerial elite, ending Mao's long-term efforts to eradicate all hierarchy and status inequalities even at the cost of slower growth and inefficiency. Experts also note the testing may be evidence of growing strength within the Chinese hierarchy by the backers of Teng-hsiao Ping, who was intrigued by the massive test-administering bureaucracy he saw when he visited the U.S. Hua Kuo-feng is a known foe of SATS, and the establishment...

Georges Bank may have another natural resource: oil. That has put it at the center of a bitter legal campaign between the U.S. Department of the Interior, which wants to lease drilling rights to private oil companies, and an alliance of fishermen, environmentalists, and the Attorney General of Massachusetts, who fear an oil spill that could devastate the area. Now the pro-oil forces have swept away a major legal roadblock. Barring a successful new attack by the fishing group, the leases will be auctioned off Dec. 18 at a hotel in Providence...

Other automakers are also doing poorly. Leading Detroit's bad news bears again is Chrysler. Fears of buying a car from a company that may go bankrupt and a temporary halt in the rebate campaign combined to sink sales by 44.5% in early November. Chrysler has yard-long waiting lists for the popular front-wheel-drive Omni and Horizon models but cannot make them fast enough...
