When he reached the platform in Gray Chapel, on the Campus of Ohio Wesleyan University, all Delaware was massed in the seats. Marching clubs were milling about. The "President-making" Republican Glee Club of Columbus sang the late Mrs. Harding's favorite song, "The End of a Perfect Day." Senator Willis, feeling though not recognizing the start of a cerebral hemorrhage, muttered to his wife that he needed air. He walked across the platform, staggered through the door, fell into the arms of his secretary, Charles A. Jones...
...people told him what terrible hours a university executive had to spend on detail work. He, inexperienced, was no doubt expected to be at his desk from dawn until evensong. But, instead, he was found in his office about half as often as his predecessor. He wandered about the campus, made trips to Manhattan, continued to write for magazines. Without any facts or figures to prove the contrary students have had to bear the stigma in silence. Their justification has been attempted by the University of idaho, and despite the complications which the entertainments of a nearby city produce...

The small campus boiled with political fervor, causing President David Starr Jordan to remark: "I wonder if I'm not presiding over a young Tammany Hall." The two parties were an "aristocratic" fraternity element v. a "barbarian" element led by the constitution-writer's friends. Hoover was reluctant to run for an office himself, but they insisted he was their strongest candidate for the important post of treasurer. Finally he said, "Well, perhaps I can swing it." Swing...
