...Gratit-E.U.-de Europe's frustration with creating a binding narrative reminds me of another group of diverse people who couldn't agree on much - Canadians [Aug. 11]. Much like the E.U., Canada has constituents who pull it in different directions, wary of quick action or consolidation by any one group. I believe the heart of Canadian goodness can be found in the checks and balances that result from this interplay. I would encourage the E.U. to appreciate what it has - a collection of peacefully co-existing cultures possessing a collective voice with which to speak to the world...
...August isn't usually a month for Academy Award--worthy acting, but the Kingsley raves have been joined by tributes to Melissa Leo's work in this Sundance Festival winner. She's superb as a harried single mom who gets involved in running illegals across the Canadian border. The film matches Leo's desperate tenseness to create a spare, absorbing melodrama...
...Beijing Village is scoring high marks. The athletes' rooms are relatively spacious, and amenities like swimming pools are a nice touch. The remaining 100 or so land-crossing points must be covered by the end of 2005. This year the State Department's 211 consular offices must be able to fingerprint all visa applicants and embed all U.S. visas with a bar code containing the traveler's digitized print, photo...
Meanwhile, gearmakers have been shifting to more sustainable materials. Most skateboards, for example, are made of Canadian maple, which takes 50 years to mature. But bamboo is replaced in a tenth of that time. Hence Bob Burnquist, one of the world's top pro skateboarders, and his sponsor Flip have been developing a type of board made of bamboo, hemp and maple that he began using in competition in July. You don't have to go "full, purist radical," Burnquist says. His goal? "Connect the coolness factor to the reality of what's possible...
