Harvard researchers have successfully tested a new cancer vaccine in mice that could make previously expensive treatments accessible outside state-of-the-art medical centers. The therapy—which destroyed tumors in 90 percent of mice tested—uses small implants to avoid costly cell reprogramming outside the body. The latter technique requires practitioners to have extensive training and specialized facilities that are only available at elite hospitals. The findings, published in the journal Nature Materials last month, seek to combat those tumors that fool the immune system’s normal process of identifying dangerous substances. Normally...
Eating cured meats may lead to an increased risk of leukemia in children and young adults, according to a Harvard School of Public Health study recently published in the BioMed Central Cancer journal. The study found an association between consuming smoked or cured meat and fish more than once a week and an increased risk of acute leukemia. Conversely, researchers concluded that subjects who ate vegetables and tofu regularly along with cured meats showed reduced risk for leukemia. The population-based case-control study, conducted in Taiwan, looked into the dietary habits of 515 subjects who ranged in age from...

This book is almost certainly about all the wrongdoing Reagan perpetrated while he hid behind his coy grin and dashing good looks. From Iran-Contra to Reaganomics to introducing crack cocaine to the hood (alright, maybe he didn’t really do this, but damn if he doesn’t make a good scapegoat), there?...
After 20 years at Harvard Medical School, Professor D. Gary Gilliland will depart to lead cancer research at the pharmaceutical giant, Merck & Co., the company announced earlier this week. While at Harvard, Gilliland gained international recognition for discovering the genetic basis of leukemia and served as director of both the Leukemia Program at the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and the Cancer Stem Cell Program for the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. Gilliland’s latest work harnessed his earlier findings to explore how drugs could be used to treat leukemia. “His expertise in both basic...
